The estate of the Vogt (sheriff) in Paffendorf is first mentioned in 1230. The castle that can be seen today is built in the Renaissance style, completely constructed from bricks and surrounded by a moat on all sides; it originates mainly from the building period between 1531 and 1546.
Today, the castle houses an information center of the energy corporation RWE Power AG, and an exhibition on the region‘s history of lignite mining. During the summer months, the castle yard sees many open air concerts with artists from the region, sponsored by RWE.
