Partake in this tour and experience a combination of past and present.
It starts with a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site at
Augustusburg Castle in Brühl, including a stroll through the extraordinary
gardens of Gracht Castle in Erftstadt.
Onward to Paffendorf Castle where you will hear some background
information on the origin and exploitation of Rhenish lignite.
Lunch at the castle’s bistro will provide for some relaxation.
The next stop is the viewing platform at Hambach to see the
gigantic blade wheel excavators. You will also receive information
on recultivation measures, and you’ll be acquainted with towns
which must be relocated (due to the advancing surface mining
operations), and also some newly relocated ones to experience the
difference.
